It’s about to be June, which means summer, outdoor movies, Pride festivities, retrospectives celebrating Matt Damon and Mel Brooks, and that we’re getting closer to commemorations for the nation’s 250th birthday. All this is reflected in the month’s local repertory film offerings.

The highlights

Summer of Soul (…Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised)
Thursday, June 4, 7pm
Bryn Mawr Film Institute, 824 Lancaster Avenue, Bryn Mawr

Sunday, June 28, 4pm and 7pm
Film Society Center, 1412 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia

This 2021 documentary, directed by Philly favorite son Questlove, was based on revived footage from 1969’s Harlem Cultural Festival, and went on to win the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature. Most of us saw it during the pandemic, most likely on Hulu, but it’s getting two big-screen showings in June. The BMFI showing will feature a talkback with Vincent Williams and Len Webb of The Micheaux Mission podcast and Stephanye Watts of the Be Reel Black Cinema Club, while the Film Society Center is part of the Film Society’s “Wawa Welcome America” series of free showings of movies tied to Philadelphia.

Disney's The Lion King in Concert with The Philadelphia Orchestra
Saturday, June 20, 8pm
TD Pavilion at Highmark Mann, 5201 Parkside Avenue

Each summer at the Mann features movies shown with musical accompaniment by the Orchestra, the type of exhibition that, as we learned from Jack McCarthy’s recent meticulous history of that venue A Century of Music Under the Stars, wasn’t even technologically possible until a couple of decades ago. This summer, Damon Gupton will conduct the Orchestra in performing Hans Zimmer’s score for the 1994 animated film.

Science on Screen: Memento
Saturday, June 20, 2pm
The Colonial Theatre, 227 Bridge Street, Phoenixville

There’s a new Christopher Nolan movie, The Odyssey, coming in July, but in the meantime, the director’s first big hit, Memento, is getting a showing in Phoenixville. The film, which starred Guy Pearce as a man who can’t make new memories, will be followed by a Science on Screen presentation, “Remember Sammy Jankis—Memory, Executive Function, and the Brain,” to be presented by Dr. Joel Bish, associate professor of psychology at Ursinus College.

Wildwood, NJ
Monday, June 22, 7:30pm
PhilaMOCA, 531 North 12th Street

This is a local screening of the 1994 documentary about the titular shore town, shot on Super 8 film by an all-female crew, led by co-directors Ruth Leitman and Carol Weaks Cassidy. Footage from the film was included in Lana Del Rey’s video for "Diet Mountain Dew.” Leitman will be on hand for a Q&A.
