This Philadelphia musical consortium was founded in 2023 in the belief that “opera is for everyone”. Each summer since their founding, the adventurous group presents a weekend-long festival of operatic, vocal, and orchestral music, and this year’s theme is “magic and mystery”. Independent Sounds includes vocalist and Penn educator Angela Gilbert and horn virtuoso Todd Williams (co-directors), pianist and singer Joe Rim, and conductor Andrew Samlal, along with some of your favorite regional musicians. Williams will play the solo role in the Brandenburg No. 2 on natural horn (rather than trumpet), and there will undoubtedly be other surprises. Some shows may sell out, so check in soon!

Organ Historical Society: Jubilee Concert

Villanova-based Organ Historical Society is celebrating its 70th anniversary with a national conference in Philadelphia. There are organ recitals on historic instruments city-wide, and the conference concludes with a gala concert open to the public. Held in Marian Anderson Hall, it will be played on the Kimmel Center’s Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ (Dobson Opus 76), the largest mechanical action pipe organ in an American concert hall. Organists Ken Cowan (Rice University) and Bradley Hunter Welch (Dallas Symphony) will present works by Shostakovich, Elgar, Rimsky-Korsakov, and others, as well as two world premieres commissioned for the OHS jubilee year: Chaconne and Fugue (2025) by Pamela Decker and a duet arrangement of Gary Fry’s The Faithful, The Free and The Brave: III-Star-Spangled.

The Savoy Company: Trial By Jury and Other Gilbert & Sullivan Hits

Philadelphia’s Savoy Company returns to this garden setting for their annual outdoor summer performance. This time it’s Trial by Jury—an 1874 comic operetta that launched the Victorian-era theatrical careers of librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. Based on Gilbert’s short time as a barrister, it’s a humorous spoof of British law and the legal profession. Since this is not a full-length work, the company will also offer other G&S hits. You can come early to picnic or stroll through the lovely Stoneleigh garden, a Natural Lands property on a former Main Line estate. But you must purchase tickets in advance, and the rain date is August 16.

Longwood Gardens: The Four Seasons, A Drones & Strings Spectacular

For this 45-minute summertime extravaganza, a live string quartet will play Vivaldi’s Four Seasons while choreographed drones fly above. Their overhead movement will echo the music, creating an imaginative land-and-sky atmosphere. You can bring your own chairs (no blankets) or purchase a reserved seat. Note: This is not in Longwood’s regular outdoor amphitheater—rather, it will be located on the Orchard Lawn near the Meadow Garden. The event will be held rain or shine, and concert tickets also include all-day garden admission. Longwood advises a likely sell-out.
