The month of June is here, which means a great deal of outdoor movies as well as a wide selection of films for Pride Month from multiple area theaters. From Star Wars at the Mann to But I’m A Cheerleader in Old City, there’s plenty of contemporary gems and cult classics to choose from to start the summer.

The highlights

To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar
Tuesday, June 3, 2pm and 7pm
Ritz Five, 214 Walnut Street, Philadelphia

Sunday, June 15, 6:15pm
Saturday, June 28, 7pm
Film Society East, 125 South 2nd Street, Philadelphia

Both the Philadelphia Film Society and Ritz Five are hosting special series for Pride Month, and both are featuring To Wong Foo, director Beeban Kidron’s 1995 drag classic, which turns 30 years old this year. The film stars Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, and John Leguizamo in full drag, in the drag road trip comedy from the mid-1990s that isn’t The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Star Wars: A New Hope in concert with the Philadelphia Orchestra
Friday, June 20, 8pm
TD Pavilion at the Mann, 5201 Parkside Ave, Philadelphia

Every year, the Mann Center hosts the orchestra to play along with classic movies, and more often than not, that movie is scored by John Williams. That’s the case here, with a presentation of the original Star Wars film from 1977. You’ve probably seen Luke Skywalker blow up the Death Star before, but this is one of the more entertaining ways to see it.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
Monday, June 25, 7pm
PhilaMOCA, 531 North 12th Street, Philadelphia

“This is my happening, and it freaks me out!” Speaking of camp, PhilaMOCA is joining with Exhumed Films to show a 16mm print of Russ Meyer’s wild classic from 1970, from a screenplay by none other than Roger Ebert.

Clueless
Sunday, June 29, 4pm and 7pm
Monday, June 30, 7pm
Fathom Events (various theaters)

“As if!” Director Amy Heckerling’s hit teen retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma, starring Alicia Silverstone, Brittany Murphy, Paul Rudd, and Stacey Dash, turns 30 in July, and for the occasion, Fathom Events is presenting a two-night-only re-release at several different local theaters.
