Spring is here at last, and with it some very exciting repertory films, including an acclaimed film from two years ago with the director in attendance. Silence of the Lambs celebrates 35 years, and a program featuring martial arts films screened on 16mm.

The highlights

Nickel Boys
Wednesday, April 1, 7pm
Bryn Mawr Film Institute, 130 South Bryn Mawr Avenue, Bryn Mawr

Nickel Boys, which arrived in theaters in 2024, was one of the most groundbreaking and inventive films of recent years, telling the story of an abusive school for boys in the Jim Crow-era South, with the story told from a child’s-eye-view point-of-view.

The film’s writer/director RaMell Ross and its writer/producer Joslyn Barnes will be on hand for the film, which BMFI is presenting as part of a series called Strange Truth 2026. Haverford Assistant Professor Swetha Regunathan will host the post-screening Q&A.

The Silence of the Lambs
Sunday, April 26, and Wednesday, April 29, various times
Various theaters (Fathom Entertainment)

Jonathan Demme’s thriller featured a young FBI agent (Jodie Foster) seeking the help of one psychotic serial killer (Anthony Hopkins) to catch a different one (Ted Levine). The film swept the Oscars in 1991, becoming the last film to date to win Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay, while remaining the only horror film to win Best Picture. For its 35th anniversary, the film is getting a two-night Fathom big screen release.

Black Belt Theatre
Saturday, April 4, 2pm
The Colonial Theatre, 227 Bridge Street, Phoenixville

Black Belt Theatre was a program of martial arts movies that used to air on television—channel 29 for you local folks. Now, it’s being revived for a one-day program at the Colonial, presented by Exhumed Films. All presented in 16mm, the program will feature The Legendary Weapons of China (1983), Jade Claw (1979), and Masked Avengers (1981).

The program will also feature “vintage kung fu movie TV spots,” and it will be hosted by Grady Hendrix and Chris Poggiali, authors of the book These Fists Break Bricks: How Kung Fu Movies Swept America and Changed the World.
