In March, Philly ballet devotees can catch stars like Tatiana Youbetyabootskaya and Yakatarina Verbosovich when the NextMove Dance series brings Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo to the Prince Theater.

“America’s foremost all-male troupe in tutus and pointe shoes” delivers unforgettable satiric renditions of classic 19th-century ballets. The shows coming up March 8 through 12, 2017 will include excerpts of Le Lac des Cygnes (Swan Lake Act II), Esmeralda (“Pas de Six”), Don Quixote, and a variety of shorter works — though “it all depends on whether or not the diva prima ballerina consents to perform” a Trockadero-style “Dying Swan” solo.

The Trockadero, or the Trocks, never lack technique while they parody the greatest works of the ballet canon, featuring the full range of ballet and modern dance repertoire. The troupe has toured more than 35 countries and 600 cities since it was founded in 1974 and often appears in benefits for major international AIDS organizations. According to the Trocks, male dancers performing as swans, sylphs, princesses, and “angst-ridden Victorian ladies” don’t merely poke fun at this time-honored art form, they enhance it with this family-friendly show.

At the Prince, listen for the music of Tchaikovsky, Cesare Pugni, and Ludwig Minkus, and enjoy choreography after Lev Ivanovich Ivanov, Marius Petipa, and Alexander Gorsky, with a Trockadero twist.

In addition to the six performances in Philly, the Trocks are offering a master class on Thursday, March 9, at 1pm, and post-performance chats after the shows on Thursday, March 9, at 7:30pm and Saturday, March 11, at 2pm.

NextMove Dance presents Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo at the Prince Theater (1412 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia) March 8-12. Tickets ($20-$60) are available in advance online, by calling (215) 422-4580, or at the Prince Theater box office.
