The Juilliard String Quartet’s program for this Sunday was supposed to end with one of the most popular pieces in the repertoire — Brahms’s big, passionate quintet for piano and string quartet. Pianist Leon Fleisher had to cancel, so they’re substituting another peak of the repertoire, Beethoven’s Quartet in F Major — the last of Beethoven’s profound final quartets. The other big item on the menu is the Philadelphia premiere of Vistas, a quartet by Israeli composer Shulamit Ran that the Juilliards call “a veritable concerto for four, filled with defiant passion and mystery.” Add in an opening quartet by Haydn, and the Juilliard Quartet’s fans should receive a good mix of cheer, humanity, and depth.

The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society will present the Juilliard String Quartet on Sunday, January 25 at 8pm at the Perelman Theater, Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Broad and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia. Tickets are $24 (plus a $4 Kimmel Center surcharge), and they’re available at www.pcmsconcerts.org, by calling 215-569-8080, and at the door.
