June is here, and Philadelphia’s repertory theaters are getting set to feature retrospectives about Harrison Ford and the movies of the 1990s. Also, there’s the continuing countdown of the greatest films of all time and an anniversary tribute to one of the worst.

The highlights

Harrison Ford’s… Other Films
Tuesdays, June 6, 13, 20, and 27
Ritz Five, 214 Walnut Street, Philadelphia

The new Indiana Jones movie, The Dial of Destiny, hits theaters at the end of the month. In the meantime, there are plenty of chances to catch up on Ford’s decades of prior hits. Throughout the month, Ritz Five is featuring four of Ford’s “other films,” presumably a reference to his non-Star Wars and non-Indiana Jones work. The series, all in 4K, features 1997’s Air Force One on June 6, the 2007 “Final Cut” of 1982’s Blade Runner on June 13, the 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049 on June 20, and Clear and Present Danger on June 27. Each shows at 2pm and 7pm, except for Blade Runner 2049, which is at 1pm and 7pm.

Additionally, Fathom Events is showing Raiders of the Lost Ark at several local theaters on both Sunday, June 4, and Wednesday, June 7.

Velvet Goldmine
Saturday, June 10, 7pm
Friday, June 23, 9pm
Philadelphia Film Center, 1412 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia

Thursday, June 15, time TBA
Media Arts Council, 11 East State Street, Media

Todd Haynes’s 1998 musical roman a clef about David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and other glam rock icons has long been one of the most underrated films of the 1990s. The Film Society is showing the film twice as part of its “Freedom 90s” series featuring groundbreaking queer cinema of that decade, which also features Paris is Burning, Happy Together, and The Doom Generation.

Velvet Goldmine will also be featured on Thursday, June 15, as part of State Street Movie Night, also for Pride Month, with John Loughton hosting.

Harold and Maude
Thursday, June 15, 6:30pm
Bryn Mawr Film Institute, 824 Lancaster Avenue, Bryn Mawr

Hal Ashby’s oddball 1971 classic, starring Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon, is an important movie in the history of BMFI—it was both the last movie shown before the theater’s original building was split into two theaters in the 1970s, and the first one after the renovation was completed. The planned Cinema Classics Seminar in April was postponed due to a power outage, but the event, featuring Muhlenberg College’s professor Amy Corbin, has been rescheduled for June 15.

The 400 Blows
Sunday, June 25, 3:30pm
Thursday, June 29, 7pm
Philadelphia Film Center, 1412 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia

The Film Society’s only-in-the-nation countdown of every film in the Sight and Sound 100 is nearing the halfway point, which will arrive at the end of the month with #50, François Truffaut’s 1959 classic The 400 Blows, a key film in the French New Wave. The film is not what you’d expect from its title, and in fact tells the story of a young Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud) and his struggles at home and at school. The 400 Blows leads a monthly Sight and Sound lineup that also includes The Apartment, The Battleship Potemkin, Ali: Fear Eats the Soul, and The Piano.

The Room
Thursday, June 8, 7:30pm
PhilaMOCA, 531 North 12th Street, Philadelphia

Saturday, June 17, 10pm
Ritz Five, 220 Walnut Street, Philadelphia

Tuesday, June 27, 7pm
Fathom Events (various theaters)

Tommy Wiseau’s The Room, needless to say, did not qualify for the Sight and Sound 100. But the “Citizen Kane of Bad Movies” is getting a celebration this month to mark the 20th anniversary of its 2003 premiere. There are multiple local festivities for the anniversary, including the PhilaMOCA showing, with co-star Greg Sestero appearing for a Q&A. There’s also the monthly late-night showing at Ritz Five and a one-night-only Fathom Events showing at multiple theaters at the end of the month.
