It’s a Wonderful Whole Bloody Affair Life
The BSR December 2025 repertory movie roundup
It’s the last month of 2025, and the city’s repertory offerings will include a long-awaited long cut of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill, a queer classic at PhilaMOCA, and an IMAX bow for Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Plus, the last leg of the Film Society’s David Lynch retrospective, in addition to lots of holiday fare, which includes plenty of chances to see It’s a Wonderful Life.
The highlights
Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair
December 4-11
Various theaters
Quentin Tarantino’s revenge saga Kill Bill, starring Uma Thurman as a scorned Bride out for revenge, was released in two parts in 2002 and 2003, but the filmmaker has now combined both parts into a complete saga, lasting four hours and 35 minutes, and complete with a new animated opening sequence. Tarantino has not yet announced what he will make as his next film, which he says will be his last, but the combined Kill Bill is the closest we’re getting to a new QT film this year.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch
Sunday, December 7, 3pm and 7:30pm
PhilaMOCA, 531 North 12th Streets
John Cameron Mitchell’s 2001 rock musical about the life of a queer East German singer, which was based on Mitchell’s 1998 stage show, will be shown at PhilaMOCA. Mitchell will be on hand for both shows, which are both sold out, and the writer/director/star will offer a Q&A after the first performance, live commentary during the second, and live performances after both.
The Shining
December 12-17
Various theaters
Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall spending a winter in the creepy Overlook Hotel, is getting its first-ever IMAX release. That’s a film that, despite King’s longtime hatred for it notwithstanding, has quite a few memorable images that are going to look great on a giant screen.
The Muppet Christmas Carol
December 6-12
The Colonial Theatre, 223 Bridge Street, Phoenixville
The Muppets’ 1992 take on the Dickens classic has grown much in esteem over time, and this year, the Colonial is showing it nine times over the course of five days. On December 11, in conjunction with the People’s Light Theater’s production of A Christmas Carol, artists from that production will sing selections from the stage show’s score, ahead of the 6:45pm showing of the movie.
