Rocky, Noir City, ‘I Shot Andy Warhol’ and more
The November 2026 repertory movie roundup
It’s November, and we’ve finally reached a milestone we’ve all known was coming all year: the 50th anniversary of Rocky, Philadelphia’s most iconic film, which premiered on November 21, 1976.
The highlights
The anniversary includes the release of I Play Rocky, a new film about its making; a new memoir from Sylvester Stallone; Inquirer columnist Mike Sielski’s new book, Going the Distance: Stallone, Philly, and the Story of Rocky; and a physical release of the original film.
But there are also some chances to see the original Rocky:
Rocky: 50th Anniversary Release
November 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11
Fathom Entertainment (various theaters)
The showings will feature a special preview of I Play Rocky, which opens locally on November 9.
Also, on November 13, The Philly Pops will perform Rocky at 50: The Legacy Concert, featuring parts of Bill Conti’s score and those of other sports films, at the Kimmel Center’s Marian Anderson Hall, although it does not include a showing of the film itself.
Noir City: Philadelphia
November 13, 14, and 15
The Ambler Theater, 108 E. Butler Ave. Ambler
The annual Noir City weekend festival, traditionally held at the Colonial Theater in Phoenixville, moves this year to the Ambler Theater, though TCM host Eddie Muller will once again come to town to host the proceedings. This year’s festival, themed “Face the Music,” features nine films.
The festival features 1946’s Black Angel and 1963’s The Yellow Canary on Friday; 1955’s The Man With the Golden Arm, 1946’s The Man I Love, 1945’s Hangover Square, and 1959’s Odds Against Tomorrow on Saturday; and 1950’s Young Man With a Horn, 1957’s Sweet Smell of Success, and 1946’s Humeresque on Sunday.
I Shot Andy Warhol
Thursday, November 19, 7 p.m.
Bryn Mawr Film Institute
In her 1996 film, director Mary Harron told the story of Valerie Solanas, the woman who, in 1968, made an unsuccessful assassination attempt on Andy Warhol. In the acclaimed film, which beautifully recreated New York City during Warhol’s Factory era, Lili Taylor played Solanas, and Jared Harris played Warhol. And as the film marks its 30th anniversary, BMFI is showing it in a newly restored 4K edition, with the director in attendance.
Boogie Nights (in 70mm)
Sunday, November 1, 6 p.m.
Film Society Center, 1412 Chestnut Street.
The Film Society’s new 70mm projector debuted at the recently concluded Film Festival with Close Encounters of the Third Kind and 2001: A Space Odyssey, and now you can catch Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 drama about the 1970s porn industry, Boogie Nights, in that format. The film starred Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. See below for another PTA film, also in 70mm, at the end of the month.
