People’s Light in Malvern puts on an annual holiday pantomime that is intended to be fun for the whole family. They’re taking that “whole family” idea to the next level this year by offering a sensory-friendly performance of Arthur and the Tale of the Red Dragon on January 6. This performance — a first for People’s Light — has been adjusted to welcome children and adults on the autism spectrum, or anyone with sensory sensitivities.

Arthur is a boisterous panto-style retelling of the Arthurian legend (see our review here). Based on the British tradition, pantos mix satire and variety shows, with over-the-top performances, singing (including audience sing-alongs) and dancing, and a “dame,” a male performer in drag.

Individuals on the autism spectrum can find the traditional theatrical experience — a darkened house, bright lights, and loud noises from the stage — confusing and upsetting. To decrease the sensory overload, house lights will be partially kept up during the entire performance, while sound levels will be lowered and the use of strobe lighting reduced. In addition, space throughout the theater will be provided for standing and movement as well as quiet, safe areas in the lobby. Also, staff and performers have been trained to be ready to welcome audience members with special sensory needs, who might talk and leave their seats during the performance.

Those attending this special performance will also get a guide, via email, prior to the show to help prepare audience members for their theatrical experience.

People’s Light is partnering with Art-Reach for this performance. Stephanie Borton, associate director of Art-Reach, says "Fear is a funny thing; it can keep people that may be afraid of not fitting in from trying new things. That is what makes presentations like this one so important. Families and individuals with autism and other sensory disabilities feel welcomed because People's Light is boisterously saying, 'We want you to join us and we will do what it takes to make you feel comfortable and to ensure you have fun.’"

Arthur and the Tale of the Red Dragon: A Musical Panto, will be having a special sensory-friendly performance, Tuesday, January 6th, 2015 at 7pm, at People’s Light, 39 Conestoga Road, Malvern.
