Music of the masters in Rittenhouse, Haverford, and Society Hill

The art of organ transcription has been experiencing a renaissance recently, and one of the key figures in this is Stephen Tharp, world-renowned concert organist and composer. He’ll play two of his own transcriptions in a program later this week, namely Handel’s Overture from Music for the Royal Fireworks and Stravinsky’s Le Semaine Grasse from Three Dances from Petrouchka. The concert also includes works by Schumann, Messiaen, and Tchaikovksy, among others. It will take place at First Presbyterian Church, 201 S. 21st Street, Philadelphia, on Wednesday, October 28 at 7pm. The concert is free and open to the public.

Pianist Caroline Hong will present a solo recital featuring the world premiere of Kendall Kennison’s Glasovir, as well as works by Ingrid Arauco, Schoenberg, and Ravel. The concert will take place on Wednesday, October 28 at 4:15pm in MacCrate Recital Hall in the Union Music Building on the campus of Haverford College, 370 Lancaster Avenue, Haverford, PA. Admission is free.

The Philadelphia Chamber Ensemble features several classics on its upcoming fall concert series. These include the Beethoven Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 11 for clarinet, cello, and piano; Brahms’s Sextet No. 1 in B-flat Major, Op. 18, for two violins, two violas and two cellos; along with works by Darius Milhaud and Marcel Tournier. Concerts will take place on Friday, October 30 at 8pm and Sunday, November 1 at 2pm, at Old Pine Street Presbyterian Church, 412 Pine Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are available here or at the door.
