“History has traditionally been told by and about men,” say the filmmakers of The Women of Philadelphia. “Although many city documentaries have been produced, none have focused exclusively on the roles played by women.”

Producer Lauren Katz Smith will be on hand for a Women of Philadelphia screening on March 30. According to its website, “the documentary captures the true and compelling stories of generations of women who lived, worked, fought for change, raised their families, and shaped Philadelphia,” and the filmmakers hope to spark cross-generational conversations for people of all genders and ethnicities “about how cities support and challenge women in seeking new ways of defining success in the modern world.”

New Century Trust (NCT) was founded in 1877 at 1307 Locust Street by Eliza Sproat Turner, who wanted to serve the growing numbers of women working outside the home in the late 19th century. The site offered classes, lectures, and a lunchtime dining room that served hundreds of working women. It also was a source of help, with temporary lodging and financial support for women in crisis. Now, the building is a National Historic Landmark.

NCT is hosting a variety of events throughout the month of March, including discussions, living history presentations, and more. Click here for a full listing.
