When guest soloists play with an orchestra, they normally play one concerto, accept the applause, and feel they’ve done a good day’s work. For her appearance with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the principal cellist of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Hai-Ye Ni, will play and conduct six cello concertos. Five of them will be Baroque concertos by Vivaldi and Tartini, so they’re shorter than most of the standard concertos in the repertoire. But her finale will be a major work, Haydn’s C Major concerto — and she’ll be doing it after a first-half workout that could challenge an Olympic marathon runner.

The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia will present “Baroque Concerti with Hai-Ye Ni” on Sunday, October 19 at 2:30pm and Monday, October 20 at 7:30pm at the Kimmel Center’s Perelman Theater, Broad and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia.
