Dolce Suono’s Young Composers concert could be a gem, if it’s anything like its predecessor. Dolce Suono’s first Young Composers Competition, in 2013, generated a variety show packed with seven lively, totally unpredictable short pieces. For that event, the contestants produced compositions that reflected the continuing influence of Claude Debussy. The four winners of the second Young Composers Competition have created pieces in memory of the late Stephen Stucky, who was one of the Dolce Suono Ensemble’s leading mentors. DSE will package their creations with two works by Stucky himself and the premiere of a new piece by his award-winning student, the China-born composer and pianist Fang Man. Baritone Randall Scarlata will administer the vocals. He’ll be backed by Dolce Suono’s live-wire founder, flutist Mimi Stillman, and a chamber ensemble including piano, violin, cello, clarinet, and percussion.

The Dolce Suono Ensemble will present its Steven Stucky Memorial Concert on Tuesday, May 9, at 7pm at the Curtis Institute of Music, 1616 Locust Street, Philadelphia. Tickets ($30 general admission; $25 for seniors; $10 for students) are available online, by calling 267-252-1803, and at the door.
