Lyric Fest says happy birthday to a giant of American song on May 11.

Lyric Fest’s “Happy Hours” combine a one-hour, 5:30pm song concert with one of Lyric Fest’s tasteful and tasty receptions. The May 11 fete will celebrate the birthday of the Russian immigrant who gave us White Christmas, Easter Parade, and God Bless America. Lyric Fest’s song recitals have always ventured far beyond the standard European art song tradition, and Irving Berlin is a special favorite of Lyric Fest’s co-director, Suzanne DuPlantis. To DuPlantis, "Berlin was the tempo of our times over two world wars and the heyday of Broadway musicals and movies.” DuPlantis will lend her own mezzo to the proceedings, which is always a treat, and she’ll be accompanied by baritone Randall Scarlatta and guest pianist Harold Evans.

Lyric Fest will present Happy Birthday, Irving Berlin on Thursday, May 11, at 5:30pm at the Academy of Vocal Arts, 1920 Spruce Street, Philadelphia. Tickets are $25 in advance online, or they can be purchased for cash only at the door for $30 ($10 for students).
