If you’re in the mood for some classic chills this Halloween, head to Germantown on Thursday, October 30 for a special showing of 1920’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, starring Philadelphia native John Barrymore (who’s buried nearby, in East Falls).

The event is happening thanks to host First United Methodist Church of Germantown (FUMCOG), turning out the lights in its eerie, gothic-revival space, and partner Weavers Way Co-Op. And this is no ordinary showing of the famous silent thriller.

Kevin O’Malia, the music director at FUMCOG, will improvise a one-of-a-kind live soundtrack for the film on the church’s pipe organ.

“Improvising a film score combines musicianship and personal reaction in real time,” O’Malia said, looking forward to a good time for all. Music fans should be sure to arrive early: at 7:30pm, when the doors open for the event, violin students from Settlement Music School’s Germantown branch will be performing special Halloween-themed selections.

Moviegoers are encouraged to come in costume, and there will be a post-show reception at the Green Tree Tavern, next to FUMCOG, with snacks from Weavers Way.

The First United Methodist Church of Germantown, 6001 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia, presents a screening of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at 8pm on Thursday, October 30. There is a suggested donation of $10 (benefiting FUMCOG’s music ministry). For more information, call 215-438-3677 or click here.
