It may be hard to fathom, but the new musical season is fast coming upon us. Our first-half-of-September preview includes two concerts featuring music of the flute, a chamber music sampler, a plethora of Puccini’s greatest hits, and several upcoming season-long series to add to your calendar. Opera Philadelphia: Meet Me at the Eagle: Pipe Up Series Kickoff

Wanamaker Building, 1300 Market Street

Much to the delight of many, beginning on September 7 Opera Philadelphia is throwing open the doors of the Wanamaker Building, inviting the city back into this space to experience the famous pipe organ—and much more. Unfortunately (like many Opera Philadelphia offerings) the September 7 multi-arts presentation is sold out, but you can sign up for more news of the Pipe Up! Series, as the opera company and creative partners work to breathe new life into this historic venue.

Artcinia: Dvořák String Quintet

Opening their season of classical (and jazz) concerts presented throughout the region, Artcinia offers an afternoon of chamber music featuring Antonin Dvořák’s majestic String Quintet No.2, along with a selection of short pieces from the Americas—the U.S., Venezuela, Argentina, Brazil, and Cuba. Performers include Natasha Colkett and Luigi Mazzocchi (violins), Hannah Rose Nicholas (viola), Kelvin Diaz Inoa (cello), and Brent Edmonson (bass).

Dolce Suono: Season Countdown Concert

This ensemble will be opening their 20th anniversary season in early October, but they’re offering this free season preview (no reservations required and co-presented by Trinity Music Sessions) featuring trios by Fang Man, Zhou Tian, and Thomas Whitman. The works will be performed by Mimi Stillman (flute), Che-Hung Chen (violin), and harpist Subin Lee, in a concert that’s part of a recording session for the ensemble’s upcoming album.

OperaDelaware Studio Series: Puccini Portraits

This busy opera company opens the season with one of its popular recitals, this one featuring its four company artists—sopranos Toni Marie Palmertree and Emily Margevich, tenor Dane Suarez, and baritone Gerard Moon—in a Puccini sampler. Featured works come from some of the composer’s most popular works, including La fanciulla del West, Madama Butterfly, and Tosca, among others. The singers will be joined by an intimate string ensemble led by pianist, conductor, and arranger Husan Chun-Novak.

Philadelphia Bach Collective: Midday Concert Series
Tuesdays starting September 16 through 2025-26, 1pm
St. Mark’s Church, 1625 Locust Street

This casual daytime, pay-what-you-will concert series is dedicated to the cantatas of J.S. Bach, giving Philadelphians a mid-day musical respite. It’s an inaugural partnership of two excellent ensembles—the vocalists of Variant Six and the instrumentalists of Night Music. Throughout the coming season there will be 45-minute concerts on September 16 and October 28, 2025, and January 20, March 24, and May 5, 2026, and the collective’s website gives full details of each concert. You’ll want to put these on your calendar now!

Serafin Ensemble: The Fabulous Flute
Friday, September 19, 7pm
Grace United Methodist Church, 900 Washington Street, Wilmington

This Wilmington collective’s season opener (offered both in person and streaming online) features flutist Eileen Grycky, along with harpsichordist Gabriel Benton, South African cellist Jacques-Pierre Malan; and Serafin artistic director Kate Ransom (violin). The ensemble will play works by Handel and Telemann; a flute sonata by Anna Bon de Venezia; a trio sonata by German flutist and flute maker Johann Joachim Quantz; and a Handel violin sonata. The concert closes with Telemann’s Concerto for Flute, Violin, and Cello.
