Beethoven, Debussy, and two Hungarians come to PCMS
Want to try chamber music? Not sure where to begin? Try one of the Musicians from Marlboro concerts the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society presents every year. The Musicians from Marlboro programs feature musicians who’ve connected with one another at the famed Marlboro summer festival in Vermont, where veteran music makers and promising newcomers hone their chamber music skills and put on concerts. The programs they take on the road tend to be varied chamber music samplers, and the first Marlboro concert of the season is a sterling example. You’ll hear string quartets by Beethoven and the modern Hungarian composer György Kurtág, plus two pieces for unusual combinations: Debussy’s great trio for flute, viola, and harp, and a trio for flute, violin, and viola by another modern Hungarian, Endre Szervánszky. That doesn’t cover the whole range of chamber music, but it’s a good start. Come at 6:45pm, and you can beef up your musical knowledge with a free pre-concert lecture by composer Robert Capanna.
The Philadelphia Chamber Music Society will present “Musicians from Marlboro I” on October 13 at 8pm at the Perelman Theater at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, Broad and Spruce Streets, Philadelphia. Tickets are $24 (plus a $4 Kimmel Center surcharge), and they’re available at www.pcmsconcerts.org, by calling 215-569-8080, and at the door.
