Accessible classical and nods to Bach

Aurora Classical is a new group dedicated to providing music without the pretense that is often associated with it and might deter would-be listeners. The second performance of their subscription series features cellist Glenn Fischbach, a regular with the Philadelphia Orchestra, and his wife Jennifer K. Lee on violin. Members of the Belmonte Trio, they’ll play the Bach Cello Suite No. 3, several duets, and then they’ll be joined by their eight-year-old daughter, Emily. The concert ($20) will take place on Sunday, October 25 at 3pm at the Hotel Brotherhood, 1523 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia. Refreshments and coffee are included, as well as a cash bar. Tempesta di Mare presents Zimmerman’s Coffeehouse, a tribute to Bach, coffee, and the group’s own late longtime supporter, Mr. Bob Zimmerman. The concert will feature soprano Julianne Baird, directors Gwyn Roberts and Richard Stone, and concertmaster Emlyn Ngai. The all-Bach program includes Cantata 209, “Non sa che sia dolore”; Violin Concerto in A minor, BWV 1041; highlights from the Coffee Cantata, which is really a comic opera; and the Recorder Concert in G, after BWV 530, originally Organ Sonata No. 6. Two concerts will be held, first on Friday, October 23 at 8pm at Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, 8855 Germantown Avenue, and then on Saturday, October 24 at 8pm at the American Philosophical Society, 105 S. 5th Street, Philadelphia.
