The real you, PRIDE and PIFA, and lots more this weekend
This weekend in Philly, you can bare your soul (anonymously), catch some Leonard Bernstein at Verizon Hall, or feed a camel. Of course, these aren't your only choices — just a few highlights. Read on.
You can start indoors with Tongue & Groove Spontaneous Theater, presenting their popular WHO at the Drake on Friday at 8pm as part of InterAct’s monthlong JUNE-A-PALOOZA. The audience anonymously provides written answers to the question “Who are you?” — and the improv ensemble takes it from there to explore character, identity, and the difference between who you are and how others perceive you. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door (discounts available if you’re under 25 or over 65). (For more on JUNE-A-PALOOZA, check out our June theater picks.)
THE street fair
Saturday is a big one, with PIFA’s highly anticipated street fair — the finale of the fest — taking over Broad Street from City Hall to South Street from 11am to 7pm. It’s free to enter, and the Kimmel is anticipating more than 150,000 attendees. There will be a huge range of performances, including the Jazz Ambassadors of the United States Army Field Band, Kulu Mele’s West African- and Brazil-inspired dance and drumming, Spiral Q puppets, drums on fire (literally) from Transe Express Les Tambours, breakdancing, and the West Philly Orchestra.
There’ll also be a Ferris wheel, a giant slide, a merry-go-round, a temporary river for your paper boats, an obstacle course, an 80-foot-high Olympics-style high-diving show somehow contrived in the middle of the street, and a corral of live camels (we’re just gonna roll with that last one).
‘Le Super Grand Continental’, starring you?
Over at FringeArts, they’re already gearing up for Fringe 2018, and they need you. Montreal-based choreographer Sylvain Émard kicked off the 2012 fest with an outdoor dance spectacle featuring 150 locals at the foot of the Art Museum, and he’s back this year to make it even bigger (the largest work in the Philly Fringe’s 22-year history, in fact). Auditions for Le Super Grand Continental are under way this week, and sessions will last through the weekend.
Two-hour auditions for the 30-minute show (which Émard has presented all over the world, adapted for each city) are open to dancers of all experience levels, ages, and backgrounds. You can twirl your stuff on the FringeArts stage on Friday night from 6 to 8pm and on Saturday from 11am to 1pm, 2 to 4pm, or 5 to 7pm. Prospective dancers will try out some of the piece’s choreography for members of the production team. Wear comfortable clothes and bring some water. Check online for details and a link to sign up.
Young musicians
Music fans can hear the world premiere of “Manhattan Nights” by Kevin Day, the winner of Philadelphia Youth Orchestra’s (PYO) second annual Young Composers Competition. PYO musicians (ages 14 to 21) will also salute Leonard Bernstein with “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story. Richard Strauss is on the program, too. This is PYO’s 78th annual festival concert. It’s happening Sunday at 3pm at the Kimmel’s Verizon Hall. Tickets ($20 to $30, with a $6.50 fee) are available online.
Arts in West Park and the Pride Parade
If you’re feeling the Philly park vibe this weekend, check out the 11th annual West Park Arts Fest, happening Saturday along South Concourse Drive in West Fairmount Park from 12 to 5pm (right next to the Centennial Commons on Parkside Avenue). The free event is a partnership between the Fairmount Park Conservancy, Mural Arts, and West Park Cultural Center, featuring live, multicultural entertainment from top local dancers, musicians, and singers, plus arts-and-crafts vendors and plenty of food. There’ll also be three outdoor art installations by Philly artists Brian Bazemore, Ruth Scott Blackson, and Jesse Harrod, as well as guided historical trolley tours.
And of course, June is here and it’s PRIDE! Philly Pride is celebrating 30 years, and the celebrations this weekend start on Friday from 6 to 10pm with a block party in the Gayborhood, featuring dance parties outside partnering restaurants and clubs. On Sunday, it’s the annual PrideDay on the waterfront. The parade starts at 11:30am at 13th and Locust, and the festival is happening at the Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing from noon until 6pm. More than 100 community groups will be on hand, plus lots of craft vendors, live entertainment and dancing, a Family Zone, and food and drinks.
