The postwar period was filled with sunny, Eisenhowerian optimism — except at the movies, where film noir took a darker view of the American dream.

A free online course titled “The Case of Film Noir” is being offered via Canvas.net. Taught by film scholar Dr. Richard L. Edwards, coauthor of The Maltese Touch of Evil, the class will tackle more than 100 films noir, looking at the genre’s relationship with Hollywood and with American society.

The course is designed to run in conjunction with the Turner Classic Movies channel’s "Summer of Darkness" — but you don’t have to be a TCM subscriber to participate; free links to online public domain films will be provided.

Students who complete the course, which will take two to four hours a week in addition to movie-watching time, will get certificates. If you’ve got less time or commitment, you’re also welcome to participate in the class as much or as little as you want.

Sign up now — the class starts on June 1 — and I’ll see you around campus!
