The highlights

Blue Velvet

PhilaMOCA, based in the Eraserhood, has long been associated with David Lynch, and on September 20 it’s presenting a 20th anniversary screening of one of Lynch’s best films, 1986’s Blue Velvet. Starring Kyle MacLachlan, Laura Dern, Dennis Hopper, and Isabella Rossellini, it’s a film about one of Lynch’s favorite subjects: the darkness and criminality hidden beneath a small American town.

The Star Trek franchise turns 60 this year, and the Film Society has something special planned: the first four Star Trek movies, released between 1979 and 1986, each paired with a similarly themed episode from the 1960s TV series. Highlights include 1982’s The Wrath of Khan, paired with the TV episode (also with Ricardo Montalban) it served as a sequel to. And 1986’s The Voyage Home—the one with the whales in San Francisco—is paired with an episode that also entailed 20th-century time travel.

A League of Their Own

Penny Marshall’s 1992 baseball movie, starring Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, and Madonna, tells a fictionalized story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, in which women took the field during World War II. The showing will be followed by a remote talk with Erin Carlson, author of No Crying in Baseball: The Inside Story of A League of Their Own: Big Stars, Dugout Drama, and a Home Run for Hollywood.

Elaine May’s 1976 gangster film, which the Inquirer ranked the 16th-best Philadelphia movie of all time in its 2024 survey, told the story of a pair of small-town crooks (John Cassavetes and Peter Falk) on the run from higher-up mobsters.
