July is coming up, and the key film event is undoubtedly Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, for which even most of the repertory houses will turn over their screens for several days in the middle of the month. But in the meantime, there are plenty of older movies coming out this month at area theaters, including a Phoenixville summer tradition.

The highlights

Cirque Du Blobfest
Friday, July 10 through Sunday, July 12
The Colonial Theatre, 227 Bridge Street, Phoenixville

The 27th annual Blobfest comes to Phoenixville’s Colonial Theatre, the very theater featured in the 1958 film itself. This year’s event features a circus theme, including showings of Dumbo, Big Top Pee-Wee, Clown in a Cornfield, and Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

In addition to the traditional run-out, the Friday night program will feature “the first-ever Rocky Horror Picture Show-style screening of The Blob,” while Sunday night will feature the first-ever “Dinner en Blob.”

Citizen Kane
Sunday, July 5 and Wednesday, July 8
Various theaters (Fathom Entertainment)

Featured on numerous lists over the years as the best film ever made, Orson Welles’ 1942 masterpiece about the rise and fall of a media baron is getting a special re-release to mark its 85th anniversary.

Satantango
Saturday, July 11
Bryn Mawr Film Institute, 824 Lancaster Avenue, Bryn Mawr

If you’ve got seven hours to kill on July 11, BMFI presents a rare showing of Hungarian auteur Bela Tarr’s 1994 magnum opus, which has a running time of seven hours and 19 minutes. It’s a film that’s shown locally very rarely—the screening at the old Lightbox Film Center, shortly before the Covid shutdown in 2020, is legendary—and now it returns to town. It’s the only movie you’re likely to see this year that has not one, but two intermissions.
