Spinal Tap, Con Air, Blobfest and four Hitchcock seminars
The BSR July 2025 repertory movie roundup

This July, the screenings are bringing the heat. From an unusual celebration of the 41st anniversary of a classic to Hitchcock seminars to the annual Blobfest, the summer movies are here in Philly.
The highlights
This Is Spinal Tap
Saturday, July 5
Sunday, July 6
Monday, July 7
Fathom Events (various theaters)
Rob Reiner’s famous mockumentary about a British band’s tour of the US is getting a sequel this fall. Also, somewhat incongruously, it’s getting a 41st anniversary re-release, at different theaters via Fathom Events. The theater speakers, I’m sure, go to 11.
Con Air
Monday, July 14, 8pm
PhilaMOCA, 531 North 12th Street, Philadelphia
June 16 is Bloomsday, the day of the action in James Joyce’s Ulysses. July 14 is Con Air Day, the day that marks the setting of Simon West’s Con Air, one of the most bombastic action movies of the 1990s. It’s the movie where Nicolas Cage plays Cameron Poe, a Southern, long-haired hero—and a dead ringer for current Phillies pitcher Matt Strahm—who foils a plot of a group of criminals to hijack their transport plane. Attendees are encouraged by PhilaMOCA management to come dressed as their favorite character.
The 26th annual Blobfest
Friday, July 11 through Sunday, July 13
The Colonial Theatre, 223 Bridge Street, Phoenixville
It’s the Colonial’s annual celebration of The Blob, the 1958 schlock sci-fi classic that was shot around the area and features the theatre in one scene. This year features multiple showings of the original Blob, as well as the famous “run-out,” which this year will take place on both Friday night and Sunday. There’s also the street fair, the costume contest, and showings of such movies as Flash Gordon, The Evil Dead 2, and Gremlins 2.
