It’s been over three years since the Germantown section of Philadelphia got its very own art gallery, thanks to longtime New Yorkers Renny Molenaar and Rocio Cabello, who brought their family to Philly several years ago.

Those years have seen their share of financial bumps, as the space has always been dedicated to the art and the artists above everything else, but it’s become a community hub for all sorts of creative types and local activists.

Those interested in the best of the Northwest’s grassroots talent can check out iMPeRFeCT’s 3rd Annual Germantown Show, mounted after an open call drew 71 local artists in a huge variety of styles, including painting, photography, and a wide range of mixed-media works.

The show opened on September 13, and the festivities continue on Saturday, September 20, with a free concert from Rittenhouse Soundworks owner and recording artist Jim Hamilton (who's played alongside artists like Boyz II Men, Gerald Alston, Toni Braxton, Ursula Rucker, and many more) and guitarist/composer Richard Drueding. (It’s a potluck party, so guests are encouraged to bring a snack to share.)

Molenaar is excited to bring tunes with a lot of ardent local and national fans to the gallery, though he can’t say for sure exactly what the sound is going to be, except that it’s definitely “gallery-appropriate.”

“It’s somewhat jazzy and experimental — that’s the closest I would come to trying to define it,” he tells BSR.

iMPeRFeCT Gallery’s 3rd Annual Germantown Show is running through October 4 at 5601 Greene Street, on the south side of Maplewood Mall, in the Germantown section of Philadelphia. A free concert from Jim Hamilton and Richard Drueding is happening Saturday, September 20 at 7:30pm. The gallery is open for visitors Wednesday through Saturday from 1 to 6pm, or by appointment.
