It’s a new one for us! Our subscribers, Friends, and followers know that our Thursday, May 25, panel, The Power of Food Media: A Conversation with Kae Lani Palmisano & BSR, is BSR’s first food-focused event.

Why? Because Kae Lani Palmisano is approaching food journalism in the same way BSR approaches arts journalism: food and the arts (and media about them) are gateways for new voices and conversations, not an elitist checkpoint. Sometimes people push back on this work: see Palmisano’s recent Bon Appétit piece about the eight best cheesesteaks in Philly—she got “so much flack” for highlighting local Lebanese, Mexican, Korean, and Ethiopian chefs’ offerings alongside the better-known favorites. But this is the kind of inclusive, curious, and future-facing coverage we love at BSR.

So we’re excited to welcome Palmisano as she launches Power Dining, a podcast and newsletter exploring the power structures, power moves, and power DINE-amics of the world of food.

Here's a sneak peek:

The Thursday, May 25, event, hosted by our friends at Indy Hall Clubhouse in Northern Liberties, will be a live recording of an episode of Power Dining. Our own Kyle V. Hiller will moderate the conversation with Palmisano, journalist and digital producer Alisha Miranda (The Inquirer, Eater, Billy Penn, Philly Mag, Edible Philly, and more) and Inquirer deputy food editor Margaret Eby. It’ll be a great conversation.

And you’ll want to join us in person, because we’ll have drinks and appetizers from popular Philly Korean American pop-up Soul & Busan, and we’ll keep the night going with panelists, guests, and BSR staff and writers toasting on the Indy Hall roof deck after the panel. Plus, you might have noticed that the Northern Liberties Night Market is happening on the same night right outside our venue, and we’re not sending you off empty-handed: each Power of Food Media attendee will get three free drink tickets to use in the market.

Here's the link for tickets. And there’s a discount code for Friends of BSR (our monthly donors, starting at $5/month). We’d love to see you there!
