Calling all Philly-area book lovers: for the fourth year, BSR is taking a week to spotlight our literary community. It’s happening this year from May 17-23. Look out for giveaways, recommendations, tons of book reviews, and a virtual event on Wednesday, May 20.

We time BSR Book Week as a sort of gateway to summer, helping you find a book you’ll want to take with you on your summer adventures. And as usual, we’re focusing on Philly authors, Philly presses, and books set in or around the Philly area.

Book reviews galore

We’ll be reviewing some of this spring’s most anticipated releases, like Sara Nović’s new memoir Mother Tongue, which “retraces her path out of the hearing world and into the deaf community—and seeks to understand what it means to raise children who are different from her.” And Emma Copley Eisenberg’s new short-story collection, Fat Swim, which is getting a lot of buzz. We’ll have Philly sex educator Erica Smith’s The Purity Culture Recovery Guide, Fredricka R. Maister’s memoir on grieving, Three Times A Mourner, and many more, including fiction, nonfiction, history, and essays.

We’re thrilled to welcome Emma, New York Times editor Ken Jaworowski (his new book is What About the Bodies), Hidden City cofounder and cultural critic Nathaniel Popkin (his new novel Partly Strong, Partly Broken is out this week), and debut author Eshani Surya, whose novel Ravishing hit shelves last fall. Our own Kyle V. Hiller will be moderating. Bring your questions! RSVP here. Everyone who registers to join us on May 20 will automatically be entered to win a signed copy of Liz Moore’s 2020 bestseller Long Bright River.
