Join us December 10 on Zoom to learn the basics of good PR
HELP US HELP YOU: The PR Webinar for Artists is back for 2025!
Let me quote an email we got recently from a Fringe artist: "I am submitting a press release for my solo show, which will be on [date redacted] in the Cannonball Festival. I hope that BSR will help me to promote it." This is one of dozens of very similar emails we've gotten, this year and every year. It's not good PR. But we don't want to criticize hardworking artists. We want to help them.
In our HELP US HELP YOU webinar, all about public relations for indie artists and small cultural organizations who can't afford their own PR staffer or consultant, we break down why the email above isn't working, and how to send something much better. Because why should artists know how to do PR? They're artists! They should be able to focus on their work, but in today's world, most art-makers have to be their own one-person business as well.
The good news is that the principles of effective PR are not complicated. Anyone can learn and apply them, and you can pull together a pitch (a request for coverage) that makes it easier for journalists to say yes.
That (and lots more) is what we'll be learning in BSR's third annual(!) HELP US HELP YOU webinar. It's geared toward independent artists and small organizations, but everyone in our community is welcome, including experienced PR professionals or large organizations looking for insight on BSR coverage, or BSR readers who want a peek behind the scenes. (This webinar is free for Friends of BSR, so if you've been thinking about making the jump to support us with a monthly donation starting at $5, this is a great time.)
We’ll cover the role of arts journalists, what we need from you when you ask for coverage, what to do when you need a correction, how to build an effective long-term relationship with members of the press, and more. Then we’ll open the floor for a Q&A with the editors and two local arts PR experts: Grayce Carson and Jill Ivey. Bring your questions! The HELP US HELP YOU registration page has the full details. Tickets are a suggested $25 donation to BSR, but there's a pay-what-you-can option, so nobody is turned away for lack of funds.
We think arts journalism should be an ongoing conversation with our community, and we hope you can join us for this webinar, whether you’re an artist looking for PR tips, or a reader who wants to look deeper.
Still on the fence? Here are a few testimonials from people who have taken previous BSR webinars:
"Just wanted to let you know that your webinar is pure gold! Super-helpful and clear, I learned so much."
"This was really entertaining and informative. Two thumbs up."
"I feel very empowered!"
We hope to see you there on December 10! And even if you don't need our webinar yourself, you can help local artists as well as BSR (a small nonprofit ourselves) by spreading this learning opportunity in your networks.
