Coming up in Philly music: Beethoven with a burr

The next Musicians from Marlboro program in Philly includes a pair of novelties in addition to string quartets by Haydn and Beethoven. Tenor Nicholas Phan will sing a group of traditional Scottish songs arranged by Beethoven, followed by six Vaughan Williams songs based on poems by A.E. Housman. The Beethoven songs were commissioned by a Scottish publisher who went for the best talent available when he hired an arranger; the samples I’ve heard are an irresistible pleasure for anyone who likes simple things well done. The Vaughan Williams songs combine straightforward vocal settings with inventive instrumental effects for piano and string quartet. The Musicians from Marlboro program showcases groups from the legendary Marlboro music festival in Vermont — an annual event that led to the founding of the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society and the 50-plus concerts it presents every season.
