Art Against Fascism comes to South Street

Local artists and arts patrons who want to keep pooling their passions in favor of the Philly resistance have a can’t-miss event coming up on March 19.

“Kings, dictators, fascists? Not on our watch!” says Art Against Fascism host Andy Futuro. This local artist-and-writer extravaganza comes to South Street’s Tattooed Mom on Sunday night from 7 to 10pm “for a celebration of creativity and a blow against thuggery.”

There will be books, art, and posters for sale, with all proceeds going to the ACLU of Pennsylvania. Attendees can also make protest signs (you’re encouraged to bring materials with you), write a note to Congress, or just support the cause by having a beer — Tattooed Mom will donate 20 percent of the bar's take to the ACLU of PA for the duration of the event. For participating artists, “a political, satirical, or dystopian theme is encouraged but not mandatory.”

“There’s going to be a bunch of dirty independent writers like me there,” Futuro promised when he plugged Art Against Fascism at the March 12 meeting of Philly’s Writers Resist.

He said the event has “exploded” since he put it Facebook. Whether or not everyone can even fit inside Tattooed Mom isn’t clear: as of Tuesday, almost 300 people had RSVP’d, and nearly 2,500 people were interested. If Philly is ready to buy some art for a good cause, our civil liberties budget could get a nice boost.

Art Against Fascism is coming up on Sunday, March 19, 2017, from 7 to 10pm at Tattooed Mom, 530 South Street, Philadelphia. Entrance is free and art buyers are encouraged.
