How to describe A Summer Day, a fascinating Norwegian play, rarely produced in the US, now onstage at the Wilma? According to cast member Ross Beschler, "It's about the mystery of living, it's about love and loss, it's about trying to understand the past and the people that we are and the people that we love, and how hard that is."

Playwright Jon Fosse, a contemporary writer whom the Wilma compares to a modern-day Ibsen, is one of few playwrights ever to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. His play comes to Philly in a translation by Sarah Cameron Sunde. Don't miss BSR critic Cameron Kelsall's rave review.

Darnelle chats with Beschler about his deep involvement with the Wilma, his work with its distinctive HotHouse acting company, and this notable production directed by Wilma co-artistic director Yury Urnov.

A Summer Day is running through June 29, 2025.
