Striking, ethereal and simply amazing

Ficarelli-Halpern's 'Orchid and Hummingbird': Magical realism.
Artists' House presents another group show offering something for every taste. There are portraits, still lifes, landscapes, abstracts and even sculpture.

The front gallery space is shared by Anna Fox Ryan and Kerry Dunn. I was struck by two of Ryan's portraits, Livia and Sitting in Her Own Light, both suffused with light and somewhat ethereal-looking. Opposite her work is Kerry Dunn's MB, a portrait done in the grand style, full of color and dash. The Necklace and Sketch of S. Early give additional testimony to Dunn's skills as a portraitist.

The middle gallery features abstracts by Roberta Gross and a group of pleasant shore scenes by John F. Burk.

The hall gallery offers the most interesting grouping. Here are landscapes by Ilya Lerner and Deb Strong Napple, both working in a strong expressionist style. Caroline Weitzman offers a set of arresting still lifes (Rubber Ducky is cute, and the one utilizing colored blocks and Peeps candies is eye-catching).

But the prize for originality goes to Mindy Flexer, who does allegorical scenes featuring frogs and pigs. If she hasn't already illustrated children's books, I suspect that she'd be a natural at it.

The rear gallery displays a series of pastel portraits by Iris Shiffer, as well as more landscapes, this time in a realist style, by Lorraine Hutter, and a series of striking magic realism still lifes by Lisa Ficarelli-Halpern. Her Still Life with Pomegranates and Artichokes and Apples are striking, but Orchid and Hummingbird is simply amazing.

All told, this is another worthwhile show from the artists of Artists' House.♦
