Let’s get two things out of the way. I am really excited about this week’s special Independence Day issue. And I’m sure these pieces will make some of you angry.
As BSR’s editor, I have gotten emails from readers who appreciate how non-political we are. I have gotten emails thanking us for being political. And I have gotten emails from readers who are angry because we’re too political.
All of these subscribers are reading the same newsletter. One thing you learn early on in this business (very early on) is that you can never please everyone. And that’s ok. It’s a good thing, actually. That diversity of opinion is what BSR thrives on.
BSR writers grapple with patriotism
So no doubt the response to this week’s special issue will be mixed. You might love it. You might not. You might like some of it and put the rest under consideration. But I am proud of our writers for publicly grappling with what patriotism means to them right now. After another wild and disturbing week in American politics, we need these generous, challenging, and often uplifting narratives.
Our writers tackle parenting
in America, book bans, jury duty, American history, and the role of artists and writers in the resistance. As a bonus, we’re also bringing you a guide to two local Revolutionary-era outings, as well as a review of a fascinating new book all about the little-known writers and artists who championed the American Revolution both at home and abroad. And I am digging deep to share my own American journey with you, detailing my younger years as a conservative, what changed me, and how I’m still evolving.
America needs critique
I hope you enjoy reading these pieces as much as I enjoyed editing them. And if our writers’ opinions about America make you curious about cultural criticism, remember that our webinars on critique, Intro to review-writing (July 16) and BAD REVIEWS: How to write them and why we need them (July 17) are coming right up. They’re designed for writers and arts-lovers who want an inside look at the critic’s role. Friends of BSR attend free, as always—look out soon for your exclusive comp code.
Observing Independence Day
We know this is a time of frustration, fear, and despair for many people in America. But we hope that you can mark the upcoming holiday in a way that feels right to you, whether that’s a celebration, a protest, a barbecue, or some time to rest. Thanks as always for spending some of your week with us.
