This Monday was Trans Day of Visibility, but we're proud to have trans people visible, supported, and welcomed at BSR every day. This week, one of our trans writers interviews trans filmmaker Sav Rodgers about his documentary Chasing Chasing Amy, 28 years after the beloved and polarizing hit film Chasing Amy hit theaters.
TDoV was only one of many important events so far this week. As of Tuesday night, we were still watching a handful of high-stakes state elections after an unexpected Democratic win in Pennsylvania. New Jersey Senator Cory Booker took to the floor of the Senate and spoke for 25 hours in opposition to the MAGA agenda, breaking a record held by segregationist Senator Strom Thurmond, who spoke for a little over 24 hours to oppose the Civil Rights Act in 1957. Americans around the country are gearing up for what promises to be a massive day of protests this Saturday, April 5 in response to ICE disappearing legal US residents overseas without due process, and threats to Social Security, healthcare, science, voting rights, and so much more. Who knows what the rest of this week will bring? Be ready to stay informed and take action in favor of democracy. And remember that supporting local artists is important community work.
This week in Philly arts, we head to the national tour of the hit pop musical & Juliet (it's at the Academy of Music til Sunday and critic Cameron Kelsall is raving about it), Hedgerow's I, Banquo, the Israeli Film Festival of Philadelphia, and the latest from Kun-Yang Lin/Dancers. And Darnelle is here with a podcast conversation all about Philly Theatre Week 2025, which kicks off April 3. As usual, our contributors cover a lot of ground! Kyle will be with you tomorrow to kick off the weekend with a raft of April event guides, including roundups for film, dance, and classical music.
