Before we get to our latest stories, I want to acknowledge that we got tragic news earlier this week. Philly journalist Josh Kruger, an outspoken advocate for marginalized folks including homeless people, people living with addiction, and the LGBTQ+ community, was fatally shot in his South Philly home early on Monday morning. The case is getting national headlines, and police are working to identify a suspect.
I didn't know Josh personally outside of social-media interactions, but he was an esteemed colleague and vibrant South Philly neighbor. I especially valued how open he was about stigmatized aspects of his own life, including living with HIV. He brought his personal experience to his work, and he spoke up in ways that helped others speak up, too, and make the world a better, more welcoming place. This is a devastating loss for Philly. But it won't stop us from holding our city neighbors close, trusting in the value of the work that meant so much to Josh, and continuing it ourselves as long as we have the privilege to do so.
