It's a quiet week on the preview front this week, especially as we gear up for Book Week—which I can't believe is right around the corner! This also means that, with Book Week on the horizon, so is the unofficial start to summer. Sure, that's thinking way ahead. It's actually been a nice spring, all things considered. But all things considered, I can't help but consider how challenging this summer could be for the city. We've got plenty of events happening around Philly this summer, and while I think the city won't be ballooned with tourists like we feared last year this time, I find myself remembering some of the more difficult summers this city has seen in recent memory. From the vigorous protests of 2016 during heightened national social unrest, and a reprise of that over similar themes and events in 2020.
What will be the narrative happening around us as we get deep into our books this summer, trying to integrate wisdom, knowledge, and imagination? I can't help but wonder as the summer looms in the distance.
As for this week, though, be sure to see our roundup: GIRL DOLLS takes over FringeArts, The Woman Question remembers a group of groundbreaking scientists from the 19th century, and the FirstGlance Film Festival returns for its 29th year.
Be good, Philly!
