One of the most common questions I get when I meet people at nonprofit or cultural industry events is whether BSR coverage goes beyond Philadelphia. The answer is a resounding YES.
While we are Philly-based and Philly-centric, our coverage extends to the greater region, including the Philly burbs, Delaware, and New Jersey. When a Philly artist is up to something notable in NYC, we'll sometimes stretch there as well.
I'll admit, that's a lot of ground to cover for our small freelance team. And I think that if local media were in better shape -- particularly arts media -- we'd probably focus more exclusively on Philly. But it often happens that notable arts events in cities like Trenton, Camden, or Wilmington wouldn't receive a professional review at all if our critics didn't get there. Our readers are spread throughout the region, as well, and they deserve to see their communities reflected in our pages.
So this week is an especially good reminder: yes, we do operate in the greater Philadelphia area! We're covering a timely installation by a Mexican American artist at the New Jersey Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton Township; Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None in Newark, DE; and the latest from Passage Theatre in Trenton. We've also got plenty in Philly, too: important outings with the Philadelphia Orchestra and BalletX, plus a review of 1 Pound, 4 Ounces, which Azuka and Simpatico are teaming up to present at the Drake. This world premiere by a South Philly native is proving popular: I just heard today that the run, extended through this Sunday, is sold out. I saw the show last weekend and I'm glad I did.
Kyle will be with you tomorrow with his latest picks, and soon we'll be inviting Friends of BSR to our latest "Office Hours" meetup with our staff and writers. If that sounds interesting, don't skip that red button below reminding you that BSR is still here only because of our donors.
