One of my favorite things about the arts is that the creators unleashed there--via music or books or theater or any genre under the sun--seize the fascinating moments of history that our schoolbooks leave out. I never heard of Civil War hero Robert Smalls until BSR writer Constance Garcia-Barrio reviewed a new graphic novel about him.
This enslaved man commandeered a Confederate steamboat and fooled his way right out of Charleston's harbor, freeing himself and everyone on board. Then he went on to become a US Congressman and civil rights advocate. Start learning about his life and how he ended up part of Philadelphia's history in our review of Defiant.
Otherwise we're keeping it pretty quiet over here today, except for two new episodes of the BSR podcast, which is celebrating its 10th season! Philly Fringe reviews will begin going live later this week. We'd love to hear what you're seeing, as well!
