Philly dance companies were busy in April: we covered Roger Lee Dance Company, Filaments, Contemporary West Dance Theater, PHILADANCO!, Kun-Yang Lin Dancers, Koresh, and BalletX (see those last two below, in this week's reviews). Philly continues to be an exciting city for dance, including choreographers with a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and influences.
We love bringing you this coverage, and we salute our dance writers. Any thoughtful critic does important and difficult work, but dance writing can be especially challenging versus other more static, verbal, or narrative-based art forms. To distill mood, movement, and physical technique into clear and interesting language, mixed with a deep knowledge of the field, takes special skill. Our donors directly power this work. Thanks to everyone who supports us, especially the growing ranks of our Local Media Champions ($19/month in honor of BSR's 19th anniversary).
Speaking of critics, we are now exactly one month out from BAD REVIEWS: How to write them, and why we need them. This webinar is for anyone who wants to better understand the critic's work, and why it still matters in the age of influencers and content creators. It will be recorded, so everyone who registers will be able to watch it later, but we recommend attending live, to join the Q&A with prolific reviewer Cameron Kelsall, who's also the vice chair of the American Theatre Critics Association.
We hope to see you there! (Friends of BSR, our monthly donors, attend this and all our events for free.)
