Happy New Year! It’s always strange writing out the number for the new year—is it really 2026? Are we really closer to 2030 than we are 2020? How did we get here already? How have I been at BSR for seven years already? Our EIC Alaina Johns pointed this out to me this week during a call that we were entering our eighth year together. I was taken aback. At first, that number didn’t add up in my head. No way, I said, it’s only been—oh my, you’re right!
2019 feels like it could’ve been just a couple of years ago or a very long time ago. So much has happened, so much time has passed. There’s so much to meditate on around what the last eight years have been.
Being here for eight years means that I’ve been here for almost half of BSR’s existence. Yes, we’re celebrating 20 years of BSR, and you can come celebrate with us next week. Come party with the critics—and fellow readers, contributors, artists, friends, and other community members. Journalism is essential now, perhaps more than ever, and we want to celebrate with you the years of hard work we’ve been doing (that we includes you) in order to preserve journalism and the arts.
Come out, say hi if you can!
