Melissa Strong studied dance for more than 10 years. She is an English professor at Community College of Philadelphia, a scholar of American literature and culture, a member of the Education Advisory Committee to the Digital Public Library of America, and a contributor to Moviejawn. Before joining the faculty at CCP, she was an associate professor at Northeastern State University, where she performed with the student dance ensemble. Melissa received a Ph.D. in English from University of California, Davis. As a high school student, she wrote a weekly column for the local newspaper. She lives in Philadelphia, where she is an active patron of and volunteer for the arts. She shares dance critic and historian Lynne Garafola’s belief that dance is “a conversation… between the spectator and the artist,” and that dance critics help mediate this conversation.
